You outsource electronics assembly when you want someone to simply build your design well, without explaining it from scratch for every run. We run contract electronics assembly on our own shop floor: SMD assembly on Yamaha pick&place machines, THT assembly on an ERSA wave and an EBSO selective wave, and the assembled boards go into enclosures and get packed so that what leaves the plant is a product, not a half-finished one.
What electronics assembly at Convel covers
One term hides several technologies and stages. You can order one of them from us or all of them in sequence, without shipping boards between subcontractors.
- SMD assembly on Yamaha machines: 0402 and 0201 passives, QFN, QFP and BGA packages, reflow soldering in a Heller oven and AOI inspection of every batch.
- THT assembly: connectors, transformers, power components and anything that has to hold onto the board mechanically. Wave soldering, selective wave or hand assembly, depending on the design.
- Mixed SMD + THT boards, the most common case in modern devices. First the SMD line, then the THT stations, all on the same shop floor.
- Mechanical assembly and manual operations: heatsinks, spacers, FFC cables, plug-in modules, displays and keypads.
- Programming and functional testing to your procedure, with results recorded for every unit.
- Final assembly: enclosures, labels, serial numbers, kitting, packaging and handover of the data to your system.
Assembly only, or assembly with material sourcing?
This is the first question we ask when quoting, because the answer shapes how we work together.
Assembly from consigned material. You supply the PCBs and components, we assemble. This is a good model if you already have trusted suppliers or bought components in advance. We then agree what form the parts should reach us in (tape, trays, tubes) and what process overage is needed so the line does not stop over three missing resistors.
Assembly with sourcing. You hand over the BOM and production files, and we order the PCBs and components, watch deliveries and alternates, and stock larger batches for subsequent orders. You settle with one supplier and one deadline. Most customers switch to this model after the first run, because coordinating supply takes more time than it seems.
The two options combine freely: some components consigned, some bought by us. What matters is agreeing this before the run starts, not during it.
Prototypes, small runs and series production
We have no fixed minimum. Electronics assembly in small runs pays off when line changeover is quick, and ours is, because we have worked on one machine platform for years. Cooperation usually starts with a prototype batch or a pilot run of tens or hundreds of units. After it, you know how the device behaves and we know how the design behaves on the line: which parts need a stencil correction, where a test point is worth adding, whether a THT connector can be replaced with an SMD version. Only then do we set the series production schedule, and larger runs go through the same process, just with more feeders.
How to order electronics assembly
Electronics assembly to order starts with documentation. We quote fastest when we receive a complete set: a bill of materials (BOM) with manufacturer part numbers, Gerber files, a pick&place file with component positions, an assembly drawing showing the orientation of polarised parts, and the planned quantities and time frame. If the documentation is incomplete or was created outside a series-production environment, that is not an obstacle. We review it for automated assembly (DFM), suggest what to complete, and often propose changes that lower the unit cost more than negotiating the price would. The answer to your enquiry is a specific quote and schedule, not a vague “it depends”.
Quality you can trace
Every board goes through automated optical inspection on MEK/Marantz equipment after SMD assembly, and a visual joint inspection after THT assembly. The results go into the production system, and the ERP assigns to every batch the components it was built from, the line, the date and the person who inspected it. If one component delivery turns out to be troublesome a year later, we can point to the boards it went into. Programming and functional tests are carried out to a procedure agreed with the customer, and we can hand over the results together with the devices’ serial numbers.

Frequently asked questions about electronics assembly
What is the difference between electronics assembly and contract electronics manufacturing?
The line is a matter of convention. Electronics assembly means executing a finished design: placing and soldering the components and, where needed, building the device. Contract electronics manufacturing additionally covers buying the materials, testing, final assembly and sometimes design. At Convel you can order assembly alone or the whole thing, in both cases on the same shop floor.
Can I supply my own boards and components?
Yes. We assemble from consigned material, from components we buy, or in a mixed model. With consigned material we agree the delivery form of the parts and the process overage.
What is the minimum order?
We have no fixed MOQ. We handle prototype batches, pilot runs and series production. The unit cost depends on batch size and we state it in the quote.
Will you assemble a board that has both SMD and THT parts?
Yes, that is the most common case. The board goes through the SMD line first, then the THT stations with wave or selective-wave soldering, and finally inspection and testing.
How long does electronics assembly take?
It depends on component availability and batch size. With complete documentation and components on site, prototype batches come off the line quickly; we give a specific date in the quote and we keep to it.
