Between an assembled board and the device a customer takes out of the box there is still a good deal of work: the enclosure, display, keypad, antenna, battery, cables, seals and screws. At Convel we carry out this stage on the same shop floor where the board was assembled and tested. That way you do not pack electronics up to send somewhere else, you do not settle accounts with another subcontractor, and you do not have to work out who is responsible for a device that does not work once it has been put together.

What enclosure assembly covers

  • mounting the board in a plastic or metal enclosure or on a DIN rail, with spacers, screws or clips according to the documentation,
  • integration of LCD, OLED and TFT displays, together with FFC/FPC ribbon cables and bezels,
  • fitting membrane and mechanical keypads, buttons, knobs and LED indicators,
  • antennas, batteries and cabling: internal and external antennas, battery packs, wiring harnesses, panel connectors,
  • mechanical parts: seals, heat sinks, cable glands, protective films, nameplates,
  • add-on modules fitted on connectors: communication cards, expansion modules, readers.

Every operation has an assembly instruction that we agree with the customer before the first run, with photographs and tightening torques wherever these matter.

An order of work that saves cost

Boards go into enclosures only after programming and functional testing. This matters: a fault found before the enclosure is closed costs a few minutes; the same fault after closing means taking the device apart and testing it again. After enclosure assembly we carry out a final inspection: display and keypad operation, fit of the parts, completeness and, for sealed devices, a check of the closure as well.

Non-standard jobs

Enclosures are sometimes unusual, and a design occasionally needs extra work: an additional hole, conformal coating on part of the board, fitting a component that was not in the original documentation. We carry this out as non-standard operations, once the process has been described and the inspection agreed. If the enclosure is still being designed, it is worth bringing us in earlier: during the design review we suggest how to lay out the board and the connectors so that assembly is quick and repeatable.

Who it is for

For companies that want to receive a finished device from production, not a kit to put together. For years we have been fitting trackers and telematics modules, gas detectors, industrial and medical controllers, data loggers and automation equipment into enclosures, in runs from a few dozen to many thousands of units. After enclosure assembly the device passes to final assembly: labels, serial numbers and packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Do you supply enclosures?

We can order them together with the components or take in enclosures supplied by the customer. We settle this at the quotation stage.

Do you assemble devices that have to be sealed?

Yes, to the customer’s documentation, with seals and a check of the closure. We agree the scope of that inspection before the run.

Do you check the device after the enclosure has been closed?

Yes. The final inspection covers the operation of the user interfaces, fit and completeness.
